IDW 2011 - Interview with Scott Andrews

Scott Andrews, 27 (Vancouver) has been volunteering for the past four years with Oxfam Canada in Vancouver to raise awareness about social justice issues through documentary film screenings, flash mobs, music nights, fundraisers, and direct political action.

Ryan Cadamia, 27 (Victoria) went from following his dream to be a rock star and pursuing a career as a recording technician to working with the Victoria International Development Education Association (VIDEA), inspiring youth to tap into their own creative talents to alleviate inequalities from their local and global communities.

Krissi Bucholtz, 20 (Surrey) is the Executive Director of the People's Foundation for Sierra Leone, an organization she founded in 2009 to provide at-risk youth from the West African country with an opportunity to attend university.

On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Fara Shah and the Semiahmoo Secondary School's InterAct Club. The Semiahmoo InterAct Club (represented by Fara Shah, 17, Surrey) combines students' thirst for knowledge with their desire to help others, and mounts successful campaigns to alleviate injustices both locally and internationally, through work with ACCES Kenya and the local food bank.

IDW 2011 - Interview with Elicia Withers

On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Elicia Withers to discuss her work as a global citizen. Elicia Withers, 16 (Kelowna) is active in the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society (KFS), where she connects with her Aboriginal community, volunteers as a youth leader, and lobbies the government on aboriginal youth rights.

On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Daniel Fama to discuss his work in international development. Daniel Fama, 23 (Langley) plans volunteer trips for over 80 students at Trinity Western University, placing them with local and international organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Mustard Seed homeless shelter in Calgary, and the Bay Area Rescue Mission in San Francisco. He also volunteers in Uganda.

On January 15, 2011, BCCIC met with Anika Barlow to discuss her work in international development. Anika Barlow, 18 (Comox Valley) raised funds to put ten young people in Uganda through secondary school, and is teaching her peers in Canada about how much potential they have to impact world issues. She is currently involved with the Africa Community Technical Service (ACTS), her local NGO.

Development Lessons from Conflict and Post-Conflict Zones Growing a Country in the Midst of Crisis

In collaboration with Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry, CIDA, BC Council for International Cooperation and the University of the Fraser Valley.
Three expert panelists present some hard-won lessons from their experiences of the successes and failures of implementing sustainable development initiatives within a context of violence, natural disaster, political unrest, etc. This is not a presentation about emergency aid, but rather the reconstruction and aftermath of building peace, security, infrastructure and capacity during or after a crisis. The panelists are from Mennonite Central Committee, Food for the Hungry Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
